The Beginning Band is the starting place for any student to learn how to play a wind or percussion instrument . No Musical expereience is needed. Students will not only learn how to master the technique of an instrument but also how to read, understand and interpret music.
The Beginning Band is the perfect place to start and doesn't cost anything to try a band instrument for a quarter or semester. After a full year of beginning band, the student will be eligible for Concert Band (intermediate) Wind Ensemble (advanced) or Jazz Ensemble (advanced).
Students will learn from a band method book (Essential Elements 2000, Book 1). This book teaches an entire band how to read, count, play , write and enjoy music in a full band class. Supplemental material such as band music, solos, and small ensembles will also be distributed as neccessary for extending the students literature and musical knowledge and experience. The Beginning Band student will be responsible for attending all rehearsals during school and 2 concerts a year that occur after school in the evening. These will be graded events.
The evaluation of each student will be partially based on their class participation, attendance, active engagement in activities, practice habits, and group interaction. The other part of their evaluation will be on their knowledge of their instrument and music and their performance ability. The most important part of the beginning student's grade will be their classroom participation.
The following instruments will be taught in beginning band. Flute / Clarinet / Alto Saxophone / Trumpet / Trombone / Baritone / Percussion.
Bell Work will be assigned in class on a daily basis and turned in once a week. The Band Student must have at all times in class a pencil (not a pen), Agenda Book, Music, Instrument.
The Band Uniform will consist of Black Pants or Skirt, Black Shirt (long sleeve), Black Socks and Black shoes. BLACK MEANS ALL BLACK,
